I used to like Xplane 8, but it just took a step backwards after the release of X-Plane 11. Nothing else. It’s missing so many nice features that is not seen in other sims anymore, like auto-inflate landing gear, great drag chute, working tether, taxi speed control, dessicated wing to help in case of unserviceable ailerons, and many more. Some of the just missed features are; petstar autopilot with the better switches and more importantly the feature for auto-rotate in case a valve becomes unserviceable. The flight director is also removed for the new X-Plane. The camera zoom is very annoying when flying a tablet. The engine sounds that comes with it are very annoying as well.
So when I saw this in action on the AmaPerform-NET flight test results and saw what it was capable of emulating, then found out it was only a couple of hundred to buy and fly, I had a go. Only a couple of hours later, I was flying the little beast around on a weekend afternoon and I was really happy with the performance it delivered. Plus it does a really good job of simulating the stall, post-stall buffet, aileron roll, and aileron heeling, all of which I have spent some time flying the real plane and only been moderately happy with a couple of them. It’s not an exact match for a real 172, but you can do some pretty good work with it. I’d be surprised if you can’t get it to match pretty well on most aeroplanes in the 100th percentile or better.
Plenty of people will say the default details on the airplanes in P3D don’t quite match up to the aeroplanes of today. However, the default aeroplanes in FSX had quite a bit of headroom and most of the time, the default details in P3D are perfectly capable of emulating the details of the aeroplanes in FSX. That’s my experience anyway. The end result is that FSX airplanes fly a bit better than P3D in FSX and the reverse is true for P3D vs. FSX. When I first started I tend to tell people that the default details for the Cessna 172 in P3D are good. Then I find that it’s still actually the case, it just is so good that most of the time the default values for a Cessna 172 are the best I’ve flown.
