A beginner needs to be proficient at using a mouse. Quick selection tools are available to help you select one or a series of pixels. You must also become fluent at pixel snapping, often used when moving, duplicating, and pasting layers.
The following sections explore the tools in Photoshop.
Layers
The Layers palette (as shown in Figure 2-1) serves as the base for all graphic editing. It lays the groundwork for developing layers that can be combined and composed to create the image.
Layers represent the fundamental concept of assembling graphic elements into a composition. Photoshop layers help you organize your creative ideas in a simple, logical way that’s much easier than dealing with separate pictures. Layers give you the ability to edit pictures one layer at a time, so you can experiment, even rewrite, parts of your image.

You can delete a layer (as shown in Figure 2-2), duplicate a layer, or move a layer. In the process, you may create a complex layered image composed of several layers.

Using the Quick Selection tool, you can drag from one layer to another and select a number of pixels. This is probably the most powerful tool in Photoshop because you can select multiple pixels and do complex editing on the selected layer. When you’re done, you can merge the selected layers or move them to another layer.
The selection tool can also select an area within a layer, allowing you to make changes to only the selected area of the image. You can use this technique to create complex shapes, or trim down the size of the image.
When you’re finished working with the layers, you can switch back to the Layers palette and delete the layers you created. Or you can simply close the image and reopen it with your new layers intact.
Draw tools
The drawing tools in Photoshop are designed to make it easier for you to make quick lines and shapes. You can make a line by simply clicking anywhere on the canvas. You can draw lines, squares, circles, ovals, and polygons, as shown in Figure 2-3, and press the Enter key to complete the shape. You can make a precise line, a rough line, or a line of any size.

If you’ve never used Photoshop but want to see all the things you can do, here are 8 things you can do in Photoshop Elements instead. Some of these changes may take a little bit of getting used to, so make sure you take some time to play around with the software before you start a new project.
1. Manipulate the size of an image.
You can resize your image using the Image Size dialog box by changing the Height and Width settings in the dialog box.

With Photoshop Elements 16, you can edit text by using the Type tool. The Type tool is similar to the Type tool in Word. You can add text anywhere in your page and edit the font, size, and color.
5. Make your images look crisp.
You can make your images look crisp by applying the Sharpen filter in Photoshop Elements. This filter sharpens the edges of your images.
6. Put your favorite artwork on your website.
You can export images or websites from Photoshop Elements into HTML5 using the Export to HTML5 features in Photoshop Elements.
7. Edit video and audio files.
Photoshop Elements can edit movies, audio, and voice-over recordings. You can apply effects, filters and transitions to audio and video files.
8. Create new images.
Photoshop Elements can create custom art, images, and canvas prints.
Use the Pen tool to draw on a new layer. Use the Direct Selection tool to select the area of the art or image that you want. Press Shift+Ctrl+D on Windows or Shift+Command+D on Mac to copy the selection to a new layer.
9. Rotate an image.
Use the Rotate tool to rotate an image.
10. Using the Content-Aware Fill tool, you can make an image fit a specific area of an image.

Here’s hoping Google seriously doesn’t go ahead with its plans. If they did, it could be a disaster, not to mention the PR nightmare that would follow.
The Google alternative is hardly a certainty. It could be an experiment that leads to a great deal of collaboration among different IT firms, something that would be a good thing for the industry and users, not to mention Google would do well.

Think about it. Think about how much you’d hate it if you spent the day working in an office from 9-5 and then got fired. Now, imagine if you’re an entrepreneur, and you have a brilliant vision and you absolutely need to be able to deliver it in 3 months or less.
With the emergence of the cloud and SaaS, being an “SaaS” company is all you need to do to have the means to do business.
Seriously, without talking to some of these people I would not be surprised if they end up doing this. The software companies are profitable and there is not much need for these companies to compete other than “who has the highest priced license” which is usually the one with the most brainpower in it as an employee has to pay for it.
My question is how many companies/entrepreneurs can set something up in the cloud as inexpensively as they can run an office without the high employee cost? Do they all leave after firing everybody? Do they branch out as a different company with a different name and join another company?
Making a good change is nice for the user. Whether they can be satisfied is a different story. When you take user satisfaction out of the equation it can turn into a trainwreck. Google really cares about user satisfaction. They get great user satisfaction on Android. They get far lower user satisfaction when users complain about search errors and spam.
Yeah, I know, but it is still the corporate entity doing it. I don’t think that Google would be stupid enough to invest that much money into an endeavor that had a chance of costing them money. It would be relatively simple for Google to do this in any form of partnership with another company.
