2. Description of the Prior Art
In the past, it has been known to adhere plastic films to various base sheets such as glass fiber boards, metal foil, etc. by first applying a suitable adhesive therebetween and then heating the film and the substrate to the melt point of the adhesive. The heating may be effected by applying radiant heat, infrared heating or the like.
Generally, heat curable materials such as epoxy resin have been used as adhesives. The adhesive is applied to the base sheet and the film and the sheet and film are bonded together by the application of heat.
Heat curable epoxy resins are generally used as adhesives for glazing to bonds thin, radiation curing type acrylics films to glass, ceramic or metal.
The heat curing conditions for thin, radiation curing type acrylics films are generally longer than the heat curing conditions for the epoxy-acrylic films. This is because the epoxy crosslinking provides rapid cross-linking at high temperatures.
Epoxy-acrylic adhesives undergo low cross-linking during curing at high temperatures of about 350.degree. F. and higher.
To improve the adhesion between the film and the base sheet, the base sheet is usually treated with an abrader, i.e., chemical, mechanical or electromagnetic, to roughen the surface thereof. The most widely known abrader used for roughening the surface of a base sheet is alumina trihydrate commonly referred to as alumina trihydrate or alumina hydrate.
